Frequently Asked Questions about Expos Section Assignments

When do Spring 2017 Expos 20 classes start?
Monday/Wednesday Expos 20 classes start on Monday, January 30.
Tuesday/Thursday Expos classes start on Tuesday, January 31.

How do I section?
Log into my.harvard and access the sectioning feature between noon on Wednesday, 1/25/17 and 11:59 p.m. on Friday, 1/27/17. All Expos 20 students must enter their top nine choices.

Does it matter when I section?
Sectioning is not first come, first served, so entering your choices immediately when sectioning opens does not increase your chances of getting a top choice. The Sectioning tool tries to maximize as many top choices as it can, but it is possible that you may receive a choice lower on your list, so please be sure to list sections that will best fit into your schedule. What is most important is that you section online some time before the Sectioning application is closed.

What do I do if I’ve already selected my top choices, but I’ve changed my mind/my schedule?
Students may log back into the Sectioning tool and reset preferences as many times as they need to while the sectioning period is open.

When will I find out my Expos section assignment?
Students will be notified of their Expos section assignment on Saturday, January 28, in the late afternoon or evening.

How long are the classes?
Classes meet for 50 minutes each session – so if you’re assigned to an Expos section that meets at 10:00, the class will begin a few minutes past the hour and end at 11:00.

What if I have a conflict with the time my Expos section meets?
If you’ve developed a conflict in your schedule and can no longer make it to a section time you requested, come to the Writing Program office to fill out a Section Change Request Form.

When can I submit a Section Change Request?
Section Change Requests are accepted on the second floor of One Bow Street at the following times:

  • Sunday, 1/29/17 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Monday, 1/30/17 from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Tuesday, 1/31/17 from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

What kind of information will I need to provide on the Section Change Request Form?
You will be asked for your name, HUID, and Harvard email address; the section number, title, and time of your initial Expos assignment; and your prospective concentration. You will also be asked the reason for your request and your entire anticipated schedule for the Spring 2017 term.

How does the Section Change process work?
You will fill out a form letting us know which times in your schedule are open and which of those times you’d prefer to be assigned to. You are encouraged to write the reason for your section change request. We then process those requests at the end of the day and try to grant as many as possible. Please be aware that since Expos is a limited enrollment class, we cannot grant all requests to change sections. No section of Expos 20 can be larger than 15 students.

If we aren’t able to grant your request to switch sections the first time you try, you may come back the following day to fill out a new request. We will not move your request form from one day to the next since students’ scheduling information changes – you must come in to the office to file a new request.

How will I know if my section has been changed?
At the end of each day of section changes, all students will be notified either that we were able to move them to a new class, or that we could not accommodate their request. An email will be sent to students a few hours after the daily section change period closes.

If I’m trying to change sections, which course do I go to?
You must attend the section you are initially assigned to until your Section Change Request is approved. A preceptor cannot sign you into his or her class – all changes must be processed at the Writing Program office.

If there’s a student in another section who would swap sections with me, can we trade places?
You can both come to the Writing Program office to fill out a Section Change Request. However, we cannot accept pre-arranged “swaps” – to be fair to all students (including those who might not know someone willing to swap), we handle each request on its own.

What if my section change is approved and I want to switch back?
Once you are moved into a new section, you cannot switch back into your original section.

What if I want to change sections after the January 31 session of Section Change Requests?
As of Wednesday morning, 2/1/17, Expos Registration is closed and class rosters have been finalized. No more Section Change Requests can be accepted after the January 31 deadline.
