How to Read and Write in the Sciences

There are important differences in how writers in different disciplines communicate their ideas. Find out how writing in the sciences differs in terms of style, organization, and the use of sources and evidence. Learn the fundamentals of reading articles in the sciences. Know the right questions to ask in order to determine what your professor expects from a research paper in a science or social science course.

HOW TO APPLY TO EXPOS 40

To apply for any of the 5 sections of Expos 40 taught by Margie Zohn, David Carter, and Kate Clarke, please come to the Writing Program office to complete an application. (The location is One Bow St, 2nd floor, in Seminar Room #217.) Applications will be available from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, January 23, and again from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24.

Writing Papers at Harvard: Beyond the Five-Paragraph Essay (for spring Expos students)

Especially for spring term Expos students.  Making the transition from writing papers in high school to writing Harvard papers can be confusing. Come hear helpful tips from Expos preceptors and Writing Center peer tutors on writing papers at Harvard, with particular attention to elements like thesis and argument, evidence, and using and citing sources. 

LAST DAY OF SECTION CHANGE REQUESTS!

Thursday, September 8 is the last day we are accepting requests to change Fall 2016 Expos 10 and Expos 20 section assignments. Forms can be submitted at the Writing Program from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. We are located on the second floor of One Bow Street.

Expos 40 First Class Meeting

September 1, 2016

To apply for a section of Expos 40, you MUST attend the first class meeting which is Thursday September 1st from 3 - 5 p.m. in Menschel Hall (Art Museums).  Please plan to attend at least the first 30-45 minutes. You will be able to fill out a brief application form at that session, and the process of notification, waitlist, etc. will be explained then.

Expos 20 Term Change Requests

August 27, 2016

All students who are interested in requesting to change their Expos 20 term assignment must fill out a form at the Writing Program office at One Bow Street. Please come to the office at the following times:

  •     Saturday, August 27: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  •     Monday, August 29: 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  •     Tuesday, August 30: 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Expos 10 Advising Begins

August 24, 2016

All students who are either recommended for Expos 10 or who are interested in the course must have an advising session at the Writing Program office on the second floor of One Bow Street. Sign-ups open on August 23, and advising sessions begin on Wednesday, August 24.

Students must come to the Writing Program to sign up for available timeslots.
